The main domestic rodents found in Nevada are the house mouse, white footed mouse (Deer mouse) and roof rat. There Order: Rodentia, Family, Muroidea.
Roof Rats have large membranous ears and sharply pointed muzzle their tail usually longer then their head and body combined. With tail and head length usually 11-18”. They weigh 4-12 ounces. Rat feces differs like Norway rats are larger feces 3/4” roof rats 1/2” mouse 1/4” droppings, they are almost everywhere, it is not uncommon to find mice droppings, urine or nibbled on books and paper, in desk drawer or trunks in attics. They contaminate foodstuffs more then rats, their gnawing of electrical wires causes an unknown number of fires.
They resemble the roof rat however the house mouse is a great deal smaller, and their population move into a structure when weather becomes severe. Mice have two feeding periods at dusk and dawn. Mice must feed several times during a 24 hour period. There range normally is 10-30 feet from the nest. Nest may be built in walls, cabinets, upholstery Funiture. Their urine and droppings mark trails for others. Mice are poor swimmers.
There are five very similar looking species of white footed mice in Nevada. they’re rarely seeing because they’re nocturnal. White footed mice are about same size or slightly larger then a house mice. They can be identified by their bi-colored tail upper half tan to grey lower half white, larger ears and eyes with longer tail. They are seed eaters and damage newly seeded gardens and flower beds. You can guard flower beds etc. with wire mesh.
They have become human’s chief vertebrate pest because of their great reproductive capacity and their ability to thrive in a wide variety of environmental conditions. Rodents eat human food, destroy structures, cause fires by gnawing, transmit diseases and Harbor parasites and medical and veterinary importance.
Rats cause many problems they damage crops such as citrus, sugarcane, and rice to name a few. Burrowing activities undermine foundations of homes and large structures. Their gnawing causes electrical fires when insulation is chewed. Problem in older homes especially. 1 rat may consume 20-40 pounds of food pre year rats consume 10% of their body weight daily in addition to the food rats consume, rats damage a greater quality of material by contaminating it with hair feces and urine.
