The larger carpenter ants build nest in wood, usually decayed wood, wood decaying from water damage that has dried or just decaying wood. Sugar plant food are preferred by most species. Others prefer fatty or protein rich foods. Ants consume enormous numbers of dead and decaying materials. Ants defend their habitats by stinging and biting. Problems with ants.
